Some time ago we recommend a visit to León city and now in the summer, the best plan is to enjoy a rural trip in the region. If you want to flee the city and seek more relaxed and fresh environments, then you will definitely like these charming tips.
There are many interesting options in the area and one of them is to visit El Faedo village. It is a good idea if you go for a short trip and are looking for nature. When driving to El Faedo you can visit other nearby villages along the way. Many locals from León and Asturias stop to eat at Mesón Ezequiel –> web an inn chosen for its value for money (good meals and large portions, so you should book in advance, specially when planning to go on Sundays and holidays).
Coladilla is a village which specializes in dairy products. Typically people buy yogurts here ,and in the summer the ice creams are really delicious!
To take a short break for lunch or dinner in a cozy place you should not miss Valdevimbre´s caves. There are several restaurants located inside these caves. All of them were made with pick and shovel, which gives interior walls a very original touch but the cuisine served in each restaurant varies greatly. Our friends recommend Cueva del Cura, which is the most economical choice and they prepare homemade food. Whatever cave you end up going to, you must taste the cured sausages, local meats and the typical cooked omelette.
Castrillo de los Polvazares is another beautiful stone village perfect for eating out. One of the places where you can try the cocido (typical stew ) is Cuca La Vaina, but here you can see that there are more options.
If you have wanted to go on excursions near León some good options are:
Valporquero caves (specially interesting to do the normal tour and the caving tours which are only organized in the summer by these two companies: Guheco and Naturocio).
Picos de Europa, a beautiful location with mountain trails of varying difficulty. It is important to find the degree of difficulty of each route before daring to go on. A quite easy one is the Cares river route.
Las Médulas: a spectacular landscape caused by the largest open air gold mine throughout the whole Roman Empire. Because of its uniqueness it has been declared both a Cultural and Natural Monument and it has also been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you find these winks inspiring?
Enjoy the summer! ; )
